Michigan: A History of the Great Lakes State

Michigan : A History of the Great Lakes State
I was in Doctor Rubenstein's Michigan History class at the University of Michigan-Flint in the late 70's. This book contains information from primary research papers from students not only in the class I was in but several other of Doctor Rubenstein's classes. I enjoyed his classes because the information presented not only contained the standard information people receive from high school history classes but also in depth accounts of what really was going on during those times. When I read this book it is like I am reliving those wonderful history classes. I highly recommend this book and any others Doctor Rubenstein has written. You will gain a vast wealth of knowledge about the real Michigan history. I own one of the first printings of this book and will keep it in my library as a cherished memento.

The Middle Ground : Indians, Empires, and Republics in the Great Lakes Region, 1650-1815
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (October, 1991)
Author: Richard White
Average review score:

Influential beyond its scope
Anyone who has attended an academic history conference in the last five or so years already realizes the impact that this densely-written, but provocatively argued book by an historian of the American west has had on the study of American history. For both good and ill, White's central thesis -- that Indians and Europeans in the Great Lakes region created together and sustained an elaborate system of cultural and political contact that endured for centuries based not on mutual understandings, but mutual MISunderstandings, often deliberate ones -- has come to set the tone for the most recent studies of cultural encounter and creolization in the New World. Indeed, White's "middle ground" bids fair to assume the blanket hegemony exercised over the American historical imagination a decade or more back by the idea of "republicanism." And, not without cause: White's book is in many respects a stupendous achievement -- exhaustively researched, laser-subtle analyses, and ambitious in scope. What weakens the book is White's tendency to often assert the existence of a so-called cultural "middle ground" between Indians and others in advance of the evidence he presents. The "middle ground" is too often presented as a given, one that can act as the explanation, rather than as the hypothetical that it actually is, the actual subject that should be under investigation. This said, the influence of this book will be felt for years to come.

Mono Lake: Explorations and Reflections
Published in Hardcover by Orion Pubns Inc (July, 1998)
Author: Jim Stimson
Average review score:

Amazing photos of an amazing place.
One of the top five color monographs in the last five years. In some respects, this is better that being there, if you can't be there year-round. Being both a photographer and a past resident of the Mono Basin, I relate not so much to the grand and spectactular images of tufa and sky, but to the perceptive and sublime studies of the sedate and the subtle; to the solitude found in the silence of winter and early spring. They speak to Mono's true sense of place, and as such make this a universal look at wilderness as we may never see it again. Stimson represents the rare landscape photographer who transcends the standard narrative of picture postcard color, offering the viewer a palette of texture, pattern, light and shadow more often associated with the best in black and white photography of the land.

Magical and Meaningful
This is an exceptional children's book. The story of Peter is beautifully woven through illustrations that are nothing short of magical. There's are messages about kindness, greed, and living simply, but they never jeopardize the enchantment.

More News from Lake Wobegon Hope
Published in Audio Cassette by HighBridge Company (October, 1991)
Author: Garrison Keillor
Average review score:

Four more Keillor classics
"More News From Lake Wobegon's" "Hope", contains four more stories that further cement Keillor's place as the greatest storyteller in modern American History. The first story is "Alaska", an absurdly brilliant account of an independent Minnesotan who goes to Alaska to get away from her mother. Second is "The perils of Spring", where Keillor honors the constantly struggling farmer with humor, as always. "A trip to Grand Rapids" is the story of a couple who tries to get away for the weekend, with little initial success, and "Author" is a look into the pre-adolescent mind of the future author, Garrison Keillor himself. Altogether, these stories are magnificent and would be enjoyed certainly by anyone who reads this review.

More News from Lake Wobegon: Love
Published in Audio CD by Penguin Audiobooks (February, 1999)
Author: Garrison Keillor
Average review score:

Ranking as high as any of Keillor's stories
The four stories of "Love", are quite simply genius, capturing the perfect balance between humor and poignancy. "Truckstop" is as good a story as Keillor has ever come up with, profiling the events both before and after Florian Krebsbach leaves his wife Myrtle at a truckstop. "Uncle Al's gift" provide side splitting humor as well as an excellent moral. "Rotten Apples" gives us another insight from Keillor into a child's weord, wonderful mind. And "The Wise Men" provides a glimpse into the difficulties of being a minister, especially at Christmastime. Personally, I would recommend that those considering buying this tape buy the whole "More News From Lake Wobegone" series, but if you're going to buy just one cassette, this is the one!

Mountain Biking South Lake Tahoe's Best Trails
Published in Paperback by Fine Edge Productions (March, 1998)
Authors: Carol Bonser and R. W. Miskimins
Average review score:

Insiders know the best secret spots
Carol Bonser sure knows her area and gives great directions and commentary. The maps are easy-to-understand and thorough. I've spent many fun hours on the trails she recommends. This is a good book to use in conjunction with her other titles, all about the same general region. I understand she grew up there and so has an in-depth, insider's view to where the most fun is to be had. A definite thumbs-up.
